The Rwanda national team’s schedule for the World Cup football consists of qualifying matches in the FIFA zone CAF. These will take place until the end of 2025. In the first round, Rwanda is playing in Group C against South Africa, Nigeria, Lesotho, Zimbabwe and Benin.

Does Rwanda still have a chance to qualify for the Football World Cup?

Yes. Rwanda is still in the race to participate in the 2026 World Cup. The country is now playing in the first round of the FIFA qualifiers in Africa.

Will Rwanda end up as group winners in this phase? Then it qualifies for the Football World Cup.

Will Rwanda end up as one of the four best runners-up in this phase? Then it goes on to the next qualifying round in Africa.

All of Rwanda’s other results at the end of Round 1 have the country eliminated.

How can Rwanda qualify for the Football World Cup?

Rwanda plays in the FIFA World Cup qualifying in FIFA Zone CAF. In Africa, the qualifying matches are scheduled from November 13, 2023 to November 18, 2025. To qualify for the 2026 World Cup, Rwanda must survive at least one, or else possibly two more qualifying rounds. This applies to all 54 participating African FIFA countries. Nine or ten of these CAF countries will ultimately participate in the World Cup final round.

The first World Cup qualifying phase in which Rwanda plays is a group phase. This consists of nine groups of six CAF countries each. CAF qualifying Round 1 lasts from November 13, 2023 to October 14, 2025. Each country will play ten matches: 5 home matches and 5 away matches. Rwanda starts in this first round in Group C. Their group opponents are South Africa, Nigeria, Lesotho, Zimbabwe and Benin. Will Rwanda finish first in their group? The team will then be directly qualified for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America.

Rwanda World Cup qualifiers: via one or possibly two more rounds

Will Rwanda be among the four best runners-up of all African groups in Round 1? Then it gets a second chance in Round 2: the African play-offs. The matches in these CAF qualifying play-offs are scheduled for November 2025. In that case, Rwanda will be part of a mini-tournament. The four remaining countries each play a semi-final. Both winners will play in the final of these CAF World Cup play-offs. The winner has not yet qualified for the World Cup. However, it may represent Africa during the intercontinental FIFA play-offs. These are also scheduled for November 2025.

About the FIFA qualification intercontinental play-offs

Will Rwanda participate on behalf of the football continent of Africa in the last FIFA play-offs, in the qualifying battle for a 2026 World Cup ticket? It then meets five opponents from elsewhere in the world. These come from the FIFA confederations AFC (Asia), OFC (Oceania), CONMEBOL (South America) and CONCACAF (North America, Central America and the Caribbean). CONCACAF may delegate two countries. The six countries in total are competing for the last two of the 48 tickets that entitle them to participate in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

About the 2026 FIFA World Cup

The 23rd edition of the World Cup football in North America lasts from Thursday, June 11 to Sunday, July 19, 2026. A record total of 104 World Cup matches are scheduled for the finals in host countries Canada, Mexico and the United States. The U.S. has 11 hosts, Mexico has three hosts, and Canada has two hosts. The opening match on June 11 is in Mexico, in Mexico City at the Azteca Stadium. The World Cup final is on Sunday, July 19, 2026, in the USA, New York/New Jersey, in the MetLife Stadium. At the 2026 World Cup Football finals there is a record number of 48 participating countries.

The qualifiers have started in 2023, with Rwanda being part of the World Cup Football CAF qualifiers. The very last World Cup qualifiers will be played in spring 2026, in the UEFA Zone.

The host cities of the 2026 FIFA World Cup are broken up into three North American regions. The Eastern Region consists of Atlanta (U.S.), Boston (U.S.), Miami (U.S.), New York/New Jersey (U.S.), Philadelphia (U.S.), and Toronto (Canada). The Central Region consists of Dallas (U.S.), Guadalajara (Mexico), Houston (U.S.), Kansas City (U.S.), Mexico City (Mexico), and Monterrey (Mexico). And the Western Region consists of Los Angeles (U.S.), San Francisco/Bay Area (U.S.), Seattle (U.S.), and Vancouver (Canada).

When is the World Cup draw with Rwanda?

The first World Cup football draw with Rwanda in the run-up to 2026 was on July 13, 2023. This was the draw for the first qualifying round in Africa. Rwanda ended up in qualifying group C, together with South Africa, Nigeria, Lesotho, Zimbabwe and Benin.

There may be two more draws for the World Cup for Rwanda.

The best performance ever by an African country at the Football World Cup is Morocco’s fourth place. The Moroccan football team reached the semi-finals in 2022 in Qatar. A total of four CAF countries managed to reach the quarter-finals of the Football World Cup. In addition to Morocco in 2022, these are Cameroon (1990), Ghana (2010) and Senegal (in 2022).

The group stage lasts from June 11 to June 27, 2026. Each group consists of four countries. After this first phase, a total of 32 countries will advance to the knockout phase. Namely the 12 group winners, the 12 numbers two and the eight best numbers three from the groups.

The Round of 32 is scheduled from June 28 to July 3, 2026. The Round of 16 is in the World Cup match schedule on July 4, 5, 6 and 7, 2026. The quarter-finals are on July 9, 10 and 11, 2026. The program of the semi-finals is on July 14 and 15, 2026. The consolation final is on Saturday, July 18, 2026. And the final of the Football World Cup is on Sunday, July 19, 2026.
